what i’m listening to: what did you expect from the vaccines?

one of the things i dislike most in life are people who define themselves by the music they listen to. people put themselves into boxes of r&b, indie or house and feel like they have to act, speak and dress accordingly. but when people ask you what music you’re into you always feel under pressure to put yourself into one of these categories, and hope that whoever you’re talking to is impressed by the genre you choose, that it gives off the right impression of yourself. deciding to respond with ‘i like a little bit of everything’ may seem like a cop-out or a little flaky, but in my case it couldn’t be more true. perhaps eclectic would be the best way to describe it. i tend to like songs that remind me of particular things, good moments in life - and because of that you could easily find me listening to the smiths one day, rihanna the next and songs from glee the one after. i have realised this week though that my main problem with music is becoming obsessed with one, two or three songs and then playing them on repeat until they drive me mental. last week it was you and i by lady gaga, the week before give me all your luvin’ by madonna. this way of listening to music is also fairly expensive as i end up buying them on i tunes, before swiftly deleting them from my playlist when i get bored. but in an attempt to curtail this behaviour - north to expand my musicial horizons and save my bank balance - in a state of extreme hungoverness on sunday, i decided (on recommendation from a friend) to listen to the whole of the new album from the vaccines. i can’t remember the last time i listened to a whole album - i think it could have been an 11-year-old me listening to five or even b*witched…but it’s quite a refreshing thing to do. only thing is i’ve become a little obsessed with the track “post break-up sex” (see video opposite) and have been playing it several times ever since…it seems old habits do die hard. i have so far restrained myself from purchasing it on i tunes though, so some progress in the bid to cure my one-song habit, has been made.
